About Chong Pang
Before 1956 this area was Westhill Village. It was developed by Lim Chong Pang, son of Lim Nee Soon, who divided the land into small plots and leased them for 50 cents a month. The village was renamed in his honour in 1956.
In the 1930s and 1940s fewer than 100 families lived here, about 60% of them Indian workers at the nearby British Naval Base in Sembawang, alongside Chinese planters, rubber tappers and hawkers. After the British withdrawal in 1971, many Indian families returned to India.
The village later made way for HDB estates, and the name lives on in Chong Pang City, now being rejuvenated with works due to finish by 2027.
