About Yishun Central
Yishun takes its name from Lim Nee Soon (1879–1936), the "Pineapple King" whose rubber and pineapple plantations covered much of the north. The area was known as Nee Soon until the 1980s, when the Speak Mandarin Campaign replaced dialect place names with Hanyu Pinyin. "Yishun" is the pinyin reading of his name, and many older residents still say Nee Soon.
Work on Yishun New Town began in 1981. Yishun MRT opened on 20 December 1988 as the northern end of the North–South Line; it was planned as "Nee Soon North" and renamed during construction in 1984.
The town centre grew around the station. Northpoint opened in 1992 and was expanded in 2009 and 2017, becoming the first mall in Singapore with an integrated transport hub. GV Yishun, Singapore's first cinema multiplex, also opened in 1992.
Landmarks
- Northpoint City – The largest mall in the north, with about 500 shops, a public library and North Park Residences above it.
- Yishun Integrated Transport Hub – Opened on 8 September 2019 on the site of the bus interchange that had run since 1987.
- Khoo Teck Puat Hospital – 795-bed hospital opened in 2010. Its eco design uses about 30% less energy than other hospitals, partly by channelling breezes through the building.
- Yishun Pond Park – Next to the hospital, home to The Spiral@Yishun lookout tower.
- GV Yishun – Singapore's first multiplex (1992). Frasers Property bought the site in 2025 for future redevelopment.
